Michael Jackson duet with Akon set for release

A duet recorded by Michael Jackson and rapper-producer Akon will go on sale on Monday -- the first single off an album of new music from the King of Pop after his death in 2009, his record label said on Thursday.

Called "Hold My Hand", the song was first recorded in 2007 and was leaked in an unfinished state on the Internet in 2008.
Jackson's Sony/Epic record label said Akon recently completed production on the track. It will be released globally on November 15 as the first official single from the album "Michael", which goes on sale on December 14.Sony and the executors of Jackson's estate said they had a hand-written note from the "Thriller" singer, indicating his desire that "Hold My Hand" be the first single on his next project.
"The world was not ready to hear 'Hold My Hand' when it leaked a couple years ago. We were devastated about it," said Akon, who was known to be working with Jackson before his sudden death in June 2009 at the age of 50.
"But its time has definitely come; now in its final state, it has become an incredible, beautiful, anthemic song. I'm so proud to have had the chance to work with Michael, one of my all time idols," the music producer said in a statement.
Sony also released details of the 10 tracks on "Michael" -- the first album of new material from the singer since "Invincible" in 2001.
Two of the tracks feature rapper 50 Cent and rocker Lenny Kravitz. Sony said the songs were the work of "an esteemed group of producers along with Michael Jackson. While primarily focused on songs that Michael worked on recently, there are also earlier compelling tracks."
Monday's release for digital sale of "Hold My Hand" follows the streaming on the Internet this week of another new track "Breaking News" from the upcoming album, which has met with initial skepticism.
Some music critics, along with a few of Jackson's family members, have said they do not believe the vocals on "Breaking News" really belong to the entertainer.
Jackson's estranged father Joe has said his perfectionist son would not have wanted his unfinished material released.
But last week Sony countered that after extensive research, it was confident the vocals are Jackson's own.
"Michael" has the backing of Jackson's official estate and is the latest commercial venture to capitalize on the singer's renewed popularity in death. A Cirque du Soleil show, dance videogame and a DVD set of all his pop music videos is also on its way.

Tiger Woods, wife officially divorced

By Cindy Boren
The divorce of Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren was finalized Monday in Bay County (Fla.) Circuit Court, lawyers for the former couple announced.
"We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future," they said in a statement released by Nordegren's Washington DC-based law firm of McGuireWoods. "While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness has been, and will always be, of paramount importance to both of us."
The statement, which does not divulge settlement terms, says, "Once we came to the decision that our marriage was at an end, the primary focus of our amicable discussions has been to ensure their future well-being. The weeks and months ahead will not be easy for them as we adjust to a new family situation, which is why our privacy must be a principal concern."
Varying reports have suggested that Nordegren, who purchased a home in her native Sweden after the scandal broke, could get as much as $700 million from Woods, to whom she was married in October 2004. The couple's two children are Sam, 3, and Charlie, 18 months.
The Woods-Nordegren marriage began to unspool quickly and spectacularly on the day after Thanksgiving last year with reports that the golfer had been treated for injuries after an auto accident outside the couple's home in Orlando. After that, each day brought tawdry details of a new dalliance and Woods became the butt of jokes on the internet and late-night TV and Woods' endorsement deals were canceled.
Woods, 34, took an indefinite leave from golf and sought marital counseling as well as treatment at a Mississippi clinic.
He returned to golf after a public apology for which he was widely criticized and had the worst tournament performance since turning pro in 1996.

Lindsay Lohan could be out of jail today

By Lesley Yarranton
Lindsay Lohan could be freed today, less than a week after getting a 90-day jail term.
The actress, 24, was expected to serve at least two weeks after being jailed on Tuesday for failing to attend alcohol education lessons.
But a lawyer acting for the Mean Girls star - known as LiLo - said she is trying to bring her release from Lynwood women's prison in California even further forward.
A source said: "Her team is doing everything to get her out of jail this weekend."
LiLo was last night in isolation for screaming at wardens after taunts by inmates over her relationship with female DJ Sam Ronson. She is said to have antagonised prisoners by wailing at night.

YouTube Justin Bieber hacks: Bad sign or just good taste in music?

By Christopher Dawson

Websites get hacked all the time. It’s all too easy to use insecure code, to improperly secure your web server, leave holes in your PHP implementation, or whatever. It happens to governments, corporations, mom-and-pops, you name it. People have a habit of not giving enough thought to the security of their websites. However, when one of Google’s highest profile properties gets hacked, it sends up a red flag or two.

Google is, after all, Google. They are the web in many ways and they sell advertising, applications, operating systems, and, perhaps most importantly, enterprise-class software as a service. When your corporation (or school, or SMB, or municipality) signs on for Google Apps, it’s with the understanding that your data will be safe and secure. When hackers exploit what the BBC called “relatively simple attacks that allow hackers to place code into web pages,” it undermines confidence in Google’s services.

While it’s true that this is YouTube and not Google Apps or a database of AdWords customers that was hacked, the fact that a Google property was so easily hacked remains somewhat concerning. How easy would it be to hack a publicly-facing Google Doc or Site? How about a publicly-shared Google Presentation? The answer is that it would, in fact, be pretty tough, but the perception of insecurity is far more important than the reality.

This isn’t just about Justin Bieber or Google Apps either. YouTube is quickly becoming the platform of choice for much more than funny cat tricks. Video as a promotional, advertising, collaborative, educational, broadcast, and social platform is exploding and YouTube is right on the edge of actually making money. It’s already making a fair amount of money for those with YouTube channels and now is not the time for it to look insecure to the networks, studios, and artists who will drive it to profitability (and to become the real cash cow it could be).

In Google’s defense, they solved the Justin Bieber issue very quickly. However, they can’t blow this off as “well it was just Justin Bieber.” Google needs the Justin Biebers of the world, no matter how awful they are musically, because they bring serious traffic and serious advertising dollars. When studios are deciding between Hulu and YouTube for distribution of their material, there can’t be any question about security.

Katy Perry Was 'Really Excited' To Get Naked In 'California Gurls' Video

By Jocelyn Vena

Katy Perry rocks some eye-catching confectionary costumes in her "California Gurls" video, but it's what she isn't wearing that has fans talking. When Perry isn't sporting edible bikinis in Candyfornia, she's floating atop a cloud formation made entirely of cotton candy — wearing nothing more than a pastel-colored wig and a smile.

"The cotton-candy clouds! I am a little bit naked," Perry admitted. "I was naked. And, hi, Mom! Hi, Dad!" she laughed to MTV News when she sat down to take us through the video, frame by frame.
Although Perry said the nudity didn't make her overwhelmingly anxious, the video's director did maintain an intimate atmosphere on set while shooting those scenes.
Katy Perry in her "California Gurls" video

"It was really fun to do," Perry revealed. "We had to do like a closed set because we didn't want anyone seeing anything. You weren't allowed unless you were a girl or you're gay; I think that's probably like the standard for all girlfriends. Anyways, I was really excited to do something like this and really nervous. But it turned out [OK]."

When Perry isn't in her birthday suit for "California Gurls," she's wearing a variety of sweet looks, from bedazzled Daisy Dukes to a bra fashioned from cupcakes and another that dispensed whipped cream.

"These whipped-cream [boobs] were in the music video because that was my only ammo," explained Perry, whose album Teenage Dream is due August 24. "It was really intense with all that whipped cream coming from my back through my assets."

Khloe Kardashian- Insists She's Not Pregnant

By DimeWars Staff

Socialite, Khloe Kardashian is learning all the tricks of the trade from her big, sis Kim Kardashian, so  Lamar Odom had better beware. What tricks are we talking about? Spotlight stealing! Just a few months ago, Reggie Bush and his teammates won the Super Bowl, but, if you watched talk shows on television, you would think that Kim Kardashian was some sort of coach. She was on everything from Regis & Kelly to Dave Letterman celebrating the win, like she passed Reggie the Ball or something. Khloe Kardashian, seems to be poised to do the same thing. In a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Khloe Kardashian spends five minutes talking about the L.A. Lakers. As a matter of fact, Celtics fans have even made Khloe Kardashian masks to taunt their rivals. What part of the game is that? Khloe Kardashian masks?!?! Brothers in professional sports need to stay away from Khloe, Kim and Kourtney like they're the K.K.K.... get it?
In a related news story, Khloe Kardashian recently poked fun at rumors about her own pregnancy. Khloe Kardashian joked to Ben Lyons from E! that she has the "longest 2-month baby bump in history". Khloe might not be pregnant now, but we are sure she is working on it.

Diddy's $360,000 Maybach Birthday Gift To Son Questioned On 'Nightline'

by Billy Johnson, Jr.

Diddy is making a bit of Father's Day news early after the Friday night airing of his interview with Nightline's Martin Bashir. While Bashir covered a lot of ground with Diddy, discussing his new movie, Get Him To The Greek, as well as his life as a music, fashion, and television mogul -- and the NBA Finals -- the most intriguing portion of the sit-down was Bashir's questioning about fatherhood.

When asked if he enjoyed being a dad, Diddy said yes but admitted that it was the area that he did not consider himself most successful, citing that his kids "deserved more (of his) personal time."

That response jump-started a series of questions about Diddy's parental discretion that made the hip-hop figure visibly annoyed at times.

Bashir suggested that Diddy was setting a bad example as a role model by having six kids by multiple women.

Diddy defended himself, saying, "All of my kids are taken care of. They all go to the best schools." Bashir quipped, "But you don't live with them."
Nightline aired footage of the VH1 show My Super Sweet 16, celebrating Diddy's son Justin. That episode made the news when it aired in February because Diddy gave Justin a Maybach car worth more than $360,000. Bashir asked Diddy what many people wanted to know -- "Do you think it was appropriate to buy your 16-year-old son a Maybach car worth almost $400,000?"

Diddy seemed put off by the question, replying that he can give his kids whatever he wanted. But as Bashir continued to press the issue, Diddy grew increasingly annoyed.
When Bashir asked if giving such a lavish gift imposed a "sensible lesson," Diddy said, "I feel the way I raise my children, you know, I don't have to explain to you or anybody else because nobody knows the way I raise my children."

A persistent Bashir tried an additional time to get Diddy to admit that the gesture was excessive, but Diddy stood his ground.

"It wasn't even about a lesson," he said with attitude. "It's what I wanted to do. I can do whatever I want to do with my children. And you can't question me about it. Nobody can question me about what I do with my children."

I'd like to interject and remind Diddy that actually there is someone who can question him about what he does with his children, and that someone is a little old government agency called Social Services. However, spoiling one's child is not its area of focus.

I do agree with Bashir on this issue. I don't think it makes Diddy a bad father because he bought his child an excessive gift, but a 16-year-old kid does not need a car that costs nearly double that of the national median home price. And I don't care if his dad can afford it.

Ironically, when Diddy met Bashir for the first time for this interview, he greeted him with enthusiasm, hugging him and revealing that he was a fan of Bashir's work. But he confessed, "I got a little bit nervous." At least we now know that those nerves were uneasy for good reason. If you remember, Bashir was the reporter who interviewed the late Michael Jackson for the disturbing television documentary, "Living With Michael Jackson."

Russell Crowe Isn’t Dead – He’s Still Here!

Russell Crowe is the latest celebrity to fall victim to internet death rumors. People all over have been writing “Russell Crowe has died,” on their blogs, yet he’s still alive and kicking! There are a few crazy reports stating he’s dead, while others claim he suffered serious injuries from a 50 foot drop off a mountain. Luckily Crowe’s publicist stepped in to nip this lie in the bud…

Early Thursday morning the New York radio station Z100, reported that Crowe had passed away and the news spread like wildfire. A rep for the actor confirmed to multiple sources including EW and US Weekly that the rumors are simply “not true.” The 46 year old actor is still around and doing fine.

We’re not sure who the radio station’s source was for this story but they got it completely wrong. Maybe someone was seeking revenge on him for his mediocre Robin Hood movie? Either way, this is pushing it.

Crowe is just one of many stars given a premature death sentence, he joins previous victims Jeff Goldblum, Emma Watson, Miley Cyrus, and Harrison Ford. Why would someone want something to happen to Harrison Ford?! Stop with the lies and move on.

Where do you think the Russell Crowe story originated from? Why would someone start the rumor?

Temptations singer Ali-Ollie Woodson dies at 58

Ali-Ollie Woodson, who led the legendary Motown quintet The Temptations in the 1980s and '90s and restored them to their hit-making glory with songs like "Treat Her Like A Lady," has died. He was 58.
Motown Alumni Association President Billy Wilson says Woodson died Sunday in southern California after battling cancer. He says Woodson's wife, Juanita, told him about the death.
Woodson wasn't an original member of The Temptations but helped keep them from becoming a nostalgia act.
Woodson joined the group after it produced classic hits in the 1960s and '70s that included "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," "My Girl" and "I Wish It Would Rain."
But his fiery voice helped the group notch "Treat Her Like a Lady" and other R&B hits from 1984 to 1986.

Germany wins 2010 Eurovision Song Contest

By IAN MacDOUGALL, Associated Press Writer

OSLO, Norway – Germany's Lena Meyer-Landrut won the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday with "Satellite," an upbeat, catchy pop song, edging out Turkey and Romania.
Meyer-Landrut, who turned 19 during the competition in Norway, won 246 points in the voting by a panel of judges and telephone votes from fans in the 39 participating countries.
It was Germany's second win in the songfest's 55-year history, and the victory means it will host next year's contest.
Meyer-Landrut had been second favorite among leading bookmakers, but first in a Google predictor program. Her victory marks the second year in a row that the Google program has correctly projected the winner of Eurovision, after predicting Norwegian fiddler Alexander Rybak's win in Moscow last year.
Onstage after winning, Meyer-Landrut demanded a kiss on the cheek from Rybak.
"I'm so happy and so thankful and so grateful, and I never thought we could do this," she said, covering her face with a German flag and, looking bewildered, asked: "Do I have to sing now?"
Alone on stage, with her backup singers in shadow, and dressed in a black cocktail dress, black stockings and dark pumps, Meyer-Landrut sang "Satellite" again to cheers and applause.
Germany beat the Turkish entry by 76 points. Romania came in third.
Oil-rich Norway spent 200 million kroner ($31 million) to host the elaborate songfest, which led off with a performance by Rybak, who won the contest in Moscow in 2009.
This year several countries have pulled out of the extravaganza citing financial strains, including the Czech Republic, Montenegro, Andorra and Hungary.
Observers also feared that the voting for the winner — a political consideration even in the best of times — would be affected by the continent's simmering financial tensions. The Greek government debt crisis and a subsequent European Union-led bailout has strained relations within the 27-nation bloc.
Germany's supremacy didn't inspire joy everywhere. On Russian state television, an announcer said, "Clearly everyone knows where to turn when they need money."
The contest is known for over-the-top exuberance in costumes, lighting and set design. One notable semifinal outfit — tight silver sparkly shorts — was worn by the male singers in Lithuania's InCulto group, and contestants from Romania had plumes of fire in the background.
Earlier this week, 34 contestants were whittled down to 20 in two semifinals. They were competing in the final with five pre-qualified countries — last year's winner, Norway, and the contest's four perennials: Britain, Germany, France and Spain.
Politically motivated voting, as well as bloc voting, has been fairly common in Eurovision, and this year was no exception, with former Soviet bloc countries supporting each other, a trend that has helped the region win five of the last 10 contests.

Whitney apologizes for voice in London, blames air-conditioning

Fans at London's O2 were left disappointed at Whitney Houston's concert on Sunday night, as the star was forced to apologise for her singing.

The 46-year-old, who is on her first tour of Britain in a decade, struggled through some of her best known hits.
"She doesn't want to come, my soprano friend," said the star, explaining her voice.

"Sometimes the old girl sings, but not tonight," Whitney told the crowd. "I want to do it, but she doesn't want to ... She's getting a little temperamental," she added.

The diva also had another excuse for her performance. "Turn the air-con off," she asked organisers, from the stage. "I can feel it. It takes away my soprano."

It is claimed some fans were so unimpressed by the star's comeback gig, they walked out.

But those who attended the star's Monday night show, also at the O2, had a different tale to tell. Many concert-goers said they thoroughly enjoyed it.

The first three dates of Whitney's UK tour in Manchester and Glasgow had to be postponed as she was suffering from a respiratory disorder. Whitney is due to perform again on May 1 in Glasgow and in Manchester on June 16 and 17.

Economic gloom clouds Eurovision Song Contest

By Paul Armstrong, CNN

Like it or loathe it, musicians from 25 countries will shrug off the economic gloom shrouding Europe on Saturday, to perform in the Eurovision Song Contest -- the continent's biggest musical competition.
Since it began in Lugano, Switzerland in 1956, each participating European nation has put forward a singer or group to perform a specially-written song. Telephone votes as well as judges from each country then decide the winner.
Last year, Norwegian classically-trained violinist Alexander Rybak beat contestants from 42 countries to take the crown, earning his country the right to hosts this year's showpiece.
The list of previous winners reflects the eclectic musical tastes of countries from Scandinavia to Azerbaijan, and includes British pocket dynamo Lulu, Swedish pop legends ABBA, and Lordi, an unforgettable death metal band from Finland.
Feminnem from Croatia failed to qualify from the second semi-final at this year's Eurovision Song Contest.
This year, Sweden's entry, folk-singer Anna Bergendahl, was surprisingly eliminated at the semi-final stage despite her top pre-contest billing, while another favorite, girl group Feminnem from Croatia, also failed to make it through to the final 25.
According to Google, German singer Lena is predicted to win in Norway's capital based on search results. Its projection tool shows how popular each contestant is in each participating country and then calculates the scores they would get if the voting took place at that moment.
Strange sounds at minority languages song contest
But the annual showpiece, watched by an estimated 120 million people across Europe, is staged at considerable expense by public broadcasters in each host nation.
Last's year's lavish event in Moscow, which featured a technologically elaborate stage design and legions of scantily-clad dancers, reportedly cost Russia's Channel One $43 million to stage, with the Russian government picking up much of the bill.
This year, Norway's NRK revealed it had spent $32 million on the three nights of competition -- which includes two semi-finals and a final -- but added that it could not afford to stage the event again if it successfully defended its title on Saturday.
The Netherlands had to step in to host the competition in 1980 after Israel, who hosted it the previous year, won again but chose not to participate after the Israeli Broadcasting Authority (IBA) said it could not fund another show.
According to the organizers, the rules stipulate that countries take part on the condition they are able to host the event.
But with the debt crisis in Greece threatening to engulf more countries around Europe, the Eurovision Song Contest is a luxury some countries can ill-afford. According to the organizers, Hungary, Andorra, the Czech Republic and Montenegro have all pulled out this year as their respective national broadcasters cut their budgets.
However, a spokesman for the European Broadcasting Union, which helps co-ordinate the event, denied the costs had become prohibitive.
"It's actually one of the most efficient TV shows to produce," he told CNN. "You get three very good concerts in one week broadcast across the world. So it doesn't cost that much."
He added that interest in the competition is as strong as ever across the continent, and that Hungary's national broadcaster has indicated its desire to participate again in the future.
The contest is also known for its political edge, as nations either give zero points to traditional enemies -- or, if they are enjoying good relations, the maximum number of points, as a sign of friendship.

`Diff'rent Strokes' star Gary Coleman dies

By JENNIFER DOBNER, Associated Press Writer

PROVO, Utah – Gary Coleman, the child star of the smash 1970s TV sitcom "Diff'rent Strokes" whose later career was marred by medical and legal problems, died Friday after suffering a brain hemorrhage. He was 42.
Utah Valley Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Janet Frank said life support was terminated and Coleman died at 12:05 p.m. MDT.
Coleman, with his sparkling eyes and perfect comic timing, became a star after "Diff'rent Strokes" debuted in 1978. He played younger brother Arnold Jackson a pair of African-American siblings adopted by a wealthy white man.
AP – FILE - In this Feb. 26, 2008 file photo, actor Gary Coleman appears on the the NBC
His popularity faded when the show ended after six seasons on NBC and two on ABC.
Coleman suffered continuing ill health from the kidney disease that stunted his growth and had a host of legal problems in recent years.
Coleman suffered the brain hemorrhage Wednesday at his Santaquin home, 55 miles south of Salt Lake City.
A statement from the family said he was conscious and lucid until midday Thursday, when his condition worsened and he slipped into unconsciousness. Coleman was then placed on life support.
Diff'rent Strokes" debuted on NBC in 1978 drew most of its laughs from the tiny, 10-year-old Coleman.
Race and class relations became topics on the show as much as the typical trials of growing up.
Coleman was an immediate star, and his skeptical "Whatchu talkin' 'bout?" — usually aimed at his brother, Willis — became a catchphrase.
In a 1979 Los Angeles Times profile, his mother, Edmonia Sue Coleman, said her son had always been a ham as a small child. He acted in some commercials before he was signed by T.A.T., the production company that created "Diff'rent Strokes."
"Gary remembers everything. EVERYTHING," co-producer and director Herb Kenwith told the newspaper. "His power of concentration is unlike any adult's I know."
Asked by Ebony magazine in 1979 how he learned his lines so easily, young Gary replied, "It's easy!"
But the attention his starring role brought him could be a burden as well as a pleasure. Coleman told The Associated Press in 2001 that he would do a TV series again, but "only under the absolute condition that it be an ensemble cast and that everybody gets a chance to shine."
"I certainly am not going to be the only person on the show working," he said. "I've done that. I didn't like it."
The series lasted six seasons on NBC and two on ABC and lives on thanks to DVDs and YouTube. But its equally enduring legacy became the former child stars' troubles in adulthood, including the 1999 suicide of Dana Plato, who played the boys' white, teenage sister.
Todd Bridges, who played Coleman's brother, was tried and acquitted of attempted murder.
Coleman had financial and legal problems in addition to continuing ill health from the kidney disease that required dialysis and at least two transplants. As an adult, his height reached only 4 feet 8 inches.
He continued to get credits for TV guest shots and other small roles over the years. But he told the AP in 2001 that he preferred earning money from celebrity endorsements. "Now that I'm 33, I can call the shots. ... And if anybody has a problem with that, I guess they don't have to work with me."
Coleman was among 135 candidates who ran in California's bizarre 2003 recall election to replace then-Gov. Gray Davis, whom voters ousted in favor of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Coleman, who advocated drastic steps for California's faltering economy such as lowering income taxes and raising sales tax, came in eighth place with 12,488 votes, or 0.2 percent, just behind Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt.
Running for office gave him a chance to show another side of himself, he told The Associated Press at the time.
"This is really interesting and cool, and I've been enjoying the heck out of it because I get to be intelligent, which is something I don't get to do very often," he said.
Coleman told The New York Times at the time that "I want to escape that legacy of Arnold Jackson. I'm someone more. It would be nice if the world thought of me as something more."
But legal disputes dogged him repeatedly. In 1989, when Coleman was 21, his mother filed a court request trying to gain control of her son's $6 million fortune, saying he was incapable of handling his affairs. He said the move "obviously stems from her frustration at not being able to control my life."
In a 1993 television interview, he said he had twice tried to kill himself by overdosing on pills.
He moved to Utah in fall 2005, and according to a tally in early 2010, officers were called to assist or intervene with Coleman more than 20 times in the following years. They included a call where Coleman said he had taken dozens of Oxycontin pills and "wanted to die." Some of the disputes involved his wife, Shannon Price, whom he met on the set of the 2006 comedy "Church Ball" and married in 2007.
In September 2008, a dustup with a fan at a Utah bowling alley led Coleman to plead no contest to disorderly conduct. The fan also sued him, claiming the actor punched him and ran into him with his truck.
Coleman was born Feb. 8, 1968, in Zion, Ill., near Chicago. His mother told Ebony his kidney disease was diagnosed when he was 2. He underwent his first transplant at age 5.
He attracted attention when he took part in some local fashion shows and people suggested he should get work performing in commercials, which he then did, she said.

Elton John performance in Morocco raises outcry

By HASSAN ALAOUI and ALFRED de MONTESQUIOU, Associated Press Writers
A concert by Elton John has tested the limits of Morocco's drive for modernity, probing this Muslim nation's complex and ambiguous attitudes toward homosexuality like rarely before.
Islamists in the North African kingdom were outraged by the gay pop star's visit, while the royal palace, government and his many fans backed his appearance Wednesday night.
No riots or violence was reported, said Rabat's governor, Hassan Amrani. Authorities had beefed up security with thousands of police and plainclothes officers.
In a sign of John's popularity, several thousand of his fans appeared to know his lyrics by heart even though most people in this French and Arabic speaking country know little or no English.
"He is a very big name in the music world, he's a great artist. And his private life is nobody's business," said Leila Hassan, a 43-year-old housewife.
The tension over the concert is part of a tussle between conservatives and modernizers in a nation that criminalizes homosexuality but has long been famous for a swinging party scene. Morocco has attracted gay celebrities such as designer Yves Saint Laurent and writer Paul Bowles, and recently saw the launch of its first gay magazine.
AP – Poster of British singer and composer Elton John in the street of Rabat, Morocco, Wednesday May 26
Across the Islamic world, strictly hidden but sometimes tacitly tolerated traditions of homosexuality are surfacing fitfully — and John's concert is the latest litmus test.
The public dispute between organizers for the Mawazine Festival that invited John and the Justice and Development Party, or PJD, Morocco's largest authorized Islamist group, illustrates the growing rift between Western-leaning Moroccan authorities and the more conservative Muslim movements that are on the rise in the kingdom.
"This singer is famous for his homosexual behavior and for advocating it," said Mustapha Ramid, a leader and spokesman for the PJD, the biggest opposition party with 40 lawmakers in parliament.
"We're a rather open party, but promoting homosexuality is completely unacceptable," Ramid told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
Ramid said homosexuality is against Muslim values, and he feared the British singer would "encourage the phenomenon" and be a bad influence for Moroccan youth.
Like nearly all Arab and Muslim countries, Morocco is officially hostile to homosexuality. Homosexual practices are a crime punishable by fines and prison sentences of six months to three years. In practice, however, such penalties are almost never applied, and Morocco has a long history of leniency toward homosexuality or other practices forbidden by Islam, like drinking alcohol.
Though most observers consider homosexuality common in the Arab world, most Arab countries frequently crack down on gays. Simply mentioning the topic is often taboo, and Morocco is viewed as an exception simply by allowing the public debate.
Moroccan officials dismissed the calls to ban John from performing.
"We deal with artists and intellectuals for what they do, without taking into account their private life," said El Hassan Neffali, an organizer of the Mawazine Festival. "Somebody's private life is one thing, and their art or creative activities are another."
The festival is under the patronage of King Mohammed VI — a powerful gesture in a country that remains an absolute monarchy and where the king, whose family claims descent from Islam's Prophet Muhammad, is also "Amir al-Mumineen," or commander of the believers.
Moroccan officials acknowledged that they backed the festival, along with dozens of others through the spring and summer, as a means to promote cultural diversity and openness in society. The cultural drive, along with new schools, housing projects and a vast program to reform the official teaching of Islam, is viewed as part of the king's broader plan to modernize society while offering an alternative to the Islamist groups that have become the country's biggest political force.
Abdellah Taia, a Moroccan writer and its most prominent gay advocate, said that while Moroccan gays continue to suffer from abuse, the country is evolving faster than any other in the Arab world. He noted that even the official Le Matin newspaper, considered the mouthpiece for the royal palace, came out strongly in support of John's visit.
"Have we (Moroccans) become so intolerant that we refuse and fight differences, which are to humanity what seasons are to life?" Le Matin said in backing the concert.
Taia — who lives in France — said, however, "I just wish they'd extend the support they give Elton John to ordinary Moroccan gays."
A sign of Morocco's evolution, Taia said, is the creation of a new local word to describe homosexuality in Arabic: "Mithly," replacing the pejorative usual phrase of "an act against nature."
The first gay magazine in the Arab world, called Mithly, appeared last month in Morocco, although it is sold under the counter because it didn't get a distribution license. The gay rights group that publishes it — one of the first in any Arab country — is based in Spain.
Its first edition announced John's Moroccan concert as a major symbol.
Amrani, the governor, said about 50,000 people attended the free concert in an upscale neighborhood of Rabat, the capital. Others estimated the crowd size at 15,000. Many fans were thrilled to John coming to Morocco.
"He reminds me of my youth. I used to go to his concerts when I was a student in France," said Souda Bennani, 48, a pharmacist who knew many of the lyrics by heart.
Other entertainers performing at the May 21-29 festival include Sting, Mika and Carlos Santana, along with Arab music stars. In an apparent move to defuse possible tensions, John is the only festival artist who wasn't scheduled to meet with the local media.
In Egypt, tentative plans to schedule John were canceled this month. Mounir el-Wasimi, the head of the Egyptian musicians' union, warned against the singer's possible visit in a statement that said he was "a symbol of homosexuals in the world."

'Dancing' With The Stars Crowns Tenth Champ

After a thrilling night of exciting ballroom competition, "Dancing with the Stars" crowned their tenth season champ.
Niccole Scherzinger and professional partner Derek Hough bested Olympic gold medal men's figure skater Evan Lysacek and his ballroom lady, Anna Trebunskaya, and ESPN's Erin Andrews and her partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, to walk away with the coveted mirrorball trophy. Evan and Erin finished second and third respectively.
Nicole had no words upon learning the news. The Pussycat Dolls frontwoman simply screamed with glee at having bested a determined Olympic gold medalist and his flame-haired partner. Derek, however, whose win with Nicole was his second ever (he previously won with Brooke Burke in Season 7), quickly filled the void.
"Everyone's been amazing," he told show co-host Tom Bergeron. "I'm so happy."
The pair managed to win thanks to a combination of viewer votes and their two-night competition score of 115 out of a total 120 points. Evan and Anna scored just 108.
Although it was the final show, there was still competition to be had. Shortly after the show opener - which featured appearances from Season 10 cast members Shannen Doherty, Kate Gosselin and Pamela Anderson - the then three remaining finalists - Nicole, Evan and Erin, had to dance an Argentine tango with their pros for a new judges' score.
Erin and Maks took third for the round, which lead to their elimination from the competition. The ESPN presenter wasn't surprised and she was ready with a heartfelt thanks to the show for helping her get her mojo back following the well-reported trial of her stalker.
"This experience has meant everything to me," she said. "I came here under really crummy circumstances and I just wanted to get my life back together -- and my smile... I just wanted to be myself again and you guys have been amazing."
With Erin out, the two celebs who had battled it out for the leaderboard's top spot all season were left to do it one last time. Nicole and Derek pulled out their strongest routine to date for their final number - a jive to "Proud Mary," with Nicole dressed in a Tina Turner-esque, thigh skimming gold-fringed dress. The singer looked amazing, but her dance with Derek was what really floored the judges.
"There are 12 days of Christmas, there were seven dwarfs, four Beatles, [but] there can only be one winner of 'Dancing with the Stars,'" British judge Len Goodman said as the two rounded out their evening with a perfect score - 30 out of 30. "It should be you."
Evan and Anna, however, had no intention of giving up, whipping out a quickstep that was energetic and fun, but it was given just a 28 out of 30. Carrie Ann Inaba reminded Evan though, that his drive and determination made him win "the hearts of...everyone here."
A true gentleman, Evan was ever gracious after learning of his second place finish.
"It's been such a blast. We were totally satisfied with everything we gave in these last few weeks and we're so proud of Nicole and Derek," Evan said. "They deserve [it] and they worked so hard and they inspired all the rest of the couples in the competition."
The season finale wouldn't have been complete without some drama and that came in the form of Kate Gosselin, who returned to dance again with her partner this season, Tony Dovolani. The program showed footage of Kate and Tony rehearsing for the final show, and just like earlier in the season, there was trouble in the studio after Kate asked Tony to make their dance more technical.
"I wanted to make the choreography more difficult because that's really who I am. Give me a challenge, make it harder," she said.
While she set her goals high, Kate had trouble in the rehearsal room and began protesting.
"I definitely feel like I'm gonna look dumb. I still want people to be like, 'Oh, dear,'" Kate said.
"I would guess that 90 percent of my audience doesn't like me. I'm so controversial," she told Tony, later adding, "I could stand in the middle of the floor, and just stand there. People would judge, it doesn't matter if I did a Nicole or Evan performance, I would still get picked apart to pieces so I might as well just have fun with it."
Kate did seem to have fun with it on her final number, dancing once again to Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi." She whipped across the floor, still stiff, but showing a few more moves than she exhibited over the season, before the tune changed to "I Will Survive" and Kate whipped off her long skirt to reveal a mini. The number ended with the reality star on a studio crane that lifted her up as she held her arms open to the sky.
Also joining the finale was Jake Pavelka, who was eliminated early on in the season. He hit the stage with his original "Dancing" partner, Chelsie Hightower, who waltzed off the stage leaving him to dance to "On The Wings of Love," his "Bachelor" theme, with his ladylove, Vienna.

Mo’Hits Records leading light and kokomaster, D’banj, has emerged the highest paid Nigerian artiste, Showbiz Trends can reveal.

According to a reliable source close to an Ikeja-based events packaging firm that also handles artistes’ contracts, D’banj at present receives highest performance fees and features more in most high net worth shows in the land.

Showbiz Trends learnt that the Fall In Love crooner was paid close to N15million for three slots in the ongoing Star Trek, a cross-country concert organised by the brewing giant, Nigerian Breweries Plc.

We gathered that D’banj is being trailed on the rich list by award-winning twin pop group P-Square, who received around N12 million for three slots in the ongoing concert, followed by Wande Coal, whose performance fees for three cities show hovers around N11million.

The source revealed that D’banj was paid close to N10million for his brief performance at recently held ION International Film Festival in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and he has been scooping more shows which fetch him more dough to ascertain his status as one of the richest artistes in the country.

Meanwhile, D’Banj alongside compatriots P-Square have been signed to perform at the musical concert to celebrate the first year of telecommunications outfit, Vodafone’s operation in Ghana.

The concert will also feature other Ghanaian artistes like Ghana’s artiste of the year Sarkodie, with Eazzy and Ruff ‘n’ Smooth.

The venue of the concert is the International Conference Centre, Accra on 22 May, 2010.

Jury acquits man in killing of rapper

LOS ANGELES – A jury acquitted a man Friday of killing up-and-coming Atlanta rapper Dolla during a shooting last year at a crowded, upscale Los Angeles mall.
Jurors rejected prosecutors' contentions that the killing of Dolla, whose real name was Roderick Anthony Burton II, was a callous act of apparent revenge.
AP – FILE - In this Tuesday, May 4, 2010 picture, Aubrey Louis Berry waits in a Los Angeles courtroom
Burton and his accused shooter, Aubrey Louis Berry, had been involved in a fight at an Atlanta club less than two weeks before the shooting last May.
Berry's attorney had contended the shooting was an act of self-defense, emphasizing that Burton — a protege of hip-hop artist Akon — glorified a violent gangster lifestyle in his rap lyrics and online videos.
Berry, who has remained jailed since the May 18, 2009, shooting, hugged his attorney but was otherwise unemotional after the verdict.
Burton's mother, Dayna Robinson, sobbed.
"Oh please, somebody help me," Robinson said, as she and other family members filed out of the courtroom.
Deputy District Attorney Bobby Grace painted Berry as a killer who methodically aimed at Burton during the shooting, then ordered a valet to retrieve his rented sport utility vehicle while still clutching his gun.
In his closing arguments Monday, Grace claimed Berry had no remorse.
"Defendant Berry murdered Roderick Burton in cold blood, then tried to escape to Atlanta," Grace said.
Berry brought the gun to a business lunch at the mall. The men spotted each other at a restaurant and exchanged words in the valet area. It was then, Grace said, that Berry pulled his weapon and used it "as an instrument of death in a symphony of violence."
Grace said Berry drove around Burton as he was dying and began to plot his escape.
Defense Attorney Howard Price, however, painted a very different picture of Berry, who was soft-spoken last week as he testified about a series of incidents that led up to the shooting.
The college-educated Berry said he worked in commercial marketing, in the music industry, and "never killed anything" growing up. Price portrayed Burton, conversely, as someone who proclaimed a violent streak, bragging in his lyrics about carrying guns, singing "You be running when I shoot, I be shooting where you running" in one tune.
Price said Berry opened fire because Burton threatened to kill him and he feared he had a gun. The 24-year-old Atlanta resident was fearful because he believed the rapper had gang ties.
The jury on Friday found Berry not guilty of first degree murder and all other charges, including assault with a firearm.
Grace looked dazed after the verdict was read.
"Obviously, I'm disappointed," he told reporters.
When asked about Burton's gangster image, Grace said he hoped that wasn't the tipping point for the jurors.
"I would hate to think that the jurors' decision was based solely on lyrics," he said. "It appears they believed what the defendant had to say."

Jackson fans to spend night among his possessions

Writing by Sugita Katyal; Editing by Miral Fahmy.

Want to spend a night with Michael Jackson's possessions? The Japanese promoter of a collection of his belongings on display in Tokyo can make that dream come true on the first anniversary of the pop icon's death.
Starting Sunday, fans in Japan are expected to line up for the chance to spend one night inside the Neverland Collection at the Tokyo Tower, which to many is a shrine to the sacred memory of their idol.
More than 300,000 people have flocked to the central Tokyo landmark since the opening of the world's only official Michael Jackson exhibition on May 1.
Jackson's death on June 25, 2009 from cardiac arrest at the age of 50 shocked fans around the world and sparked a new wave of interest in his music, while a documentary film featuring the singer, "This Is It," became a blockbuster cinema hit.
The "King of Pop" was almost as well-known for his compulsive collecting as his songs.
"The idea may sound a bit odd to Western cultures, but in Japan the tradition of being with the remains and possessions of passed loved ones on the anniversary of their passing is an important ritual," said Hiroyuki Takamura of the Tokyo Tower.
Fans who are selected at random will enter the Tokyo Tower venue from 10:30 p.m. on the night of June 25, and will be able to stay until 8:00 a.m. the next morning.
"The chance to spend the anniversary of Michael's passing together with things like clothes he wore, things from his home, countless awards, and iconic video and stage sets will be an unforgettable experience," said Michael Jackson fan Mamiko Morii, who expects to be in line on Sunday.
"I have been to this exhibition more than eight times already and each time I feel more connected to Michael's legacy."
Guests will pay up to $1,000 for the one-time opportunity to sleep on the floor among Michael's belongings.
"Michael Jackson fans religiously visited daily, and many stay inside the venue for six hours or more," said Matt Taylor, producer of the exhibition.
"Many Japanese fans become overwhelmed with emotion when in the presence of so many things precious to Michael and iconic to the rest of the world. People stand fixed in front of artefacts with tears streaming down their face, still trying to come to grips with losing Michael."
