Tiger Woods, wife officially divorced

By Cindy Boren
The divorce of Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren was finalized Monday in Bay County (Fla.) Circuit Court, lawyers for the former couple announced.
"We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future," they said in a statement released by Nordegren's Washington DC-based law firm of McGuireWoods. "While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness has been, and will always be, of paramount importance to both of us."
The statement, which does not divulge settlement terms, says, "Once we came to the decision that our marriage was at an end, the primary focus of our amicable discussions has been to ensure their future well-being. The weeks and months ahead will not be easy for them as we adjust to a new family situation, which is why our privacy must be a principal concern."
Varying reports have suggested that Nordegren, who purchased a home in her native Sweden after the scandal broke, could get as much as $700 million from Woods, to whom she was married in October 2004. The couple's two children are Sam, 3, and Charlie, 18 months.
The Woods-Nordegren marriage began to unspool quickly and spectacularly on the day after Thanksgiving last year with reports that the golfer had been treated for injuries after an auto accident outside the couple's home in Orlando. After that, each day brought tawdry details of a new dalliance and Woods became the butt of jokes on the internet and late-night TV and Woods' endorsement deals were canceled.
Woods, 34, took an indefinite leave from golf and sought marital counseling as well as treatment at a Mississippi clinic.
He returned to golf after a public apology for which he was widely criticized and had the worst tournament performance since turning pro in 1996.
