Government Releases Eagles' $6 Million Budget

MTNFootball.com can exclusively reveal that the coffers of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will on Monday be credited with the sum of 900 million naira (about $6 million) being what the government has approved for the country’s participation at next month’s World Cup.

“We have an advice from the office of the accountant-general of the federation and by Monday, our approved budget of 900 million naira will be in our purse,” a top NFF official informed MTNFootball.com.

The cash is coming at a good time as the Super Eagles are expected to begin their build-up to the World Cup by Friday week in England.

Nigeria’s government has approved a total budget of 1.25 billion naira (over $8 million) for the country’s World Cup campaign in South Africa.

The NFF will receive 900 million naira, while their supervising government agency, the National Sports Commission (NSC), will get 350 million naira even though experts wonder what this money will be used for as they do not have a team to prepare.

NFF’s budget, on the other hand, will cover players’ match bonuses and allowances as well as hotel accommodation during the tournament.

For instance, Nigeria will pay $700-a-night for rooms at their new World Cup training base at four-star Waterfront Hotel at Richards Bay.

MTNFootball.com also learnt that there have been underground moves by the sports ministry to adminsiter the total budget.

Sources at the National Assembly hinted that top ministry officials have out across this proposal to the relevant committees.
